Lighting creates sense of mystery as it makes the background dark and only lights up parts of her face.

What effects are created by the lighting in the image? 
Creates a more menacing looking character that the audience should fear as his face appears darker and more covered by shadow than the background. This is also an enigma code as it makes audience question whether hes evil or just a powerful character and why hes evil/powerful.

 The lighting lets us see what genre the movie is by using highly lighting to light up his gun and badge.

What effects are created by the lighting in the image?  
The lighting allows us to see the fearful expression on her face which tells us that she's scared of something and is an enigma code as we don't know what it is that she's scared of.

What effects are created by the lighting in the image?  
The soft low-key light on the couple makes the audience feel as though three intruding on a private romantic moment between the characters who are hiding from other characters.

Makes the characters more mysterious and scary as we can't see what they look lie or who they are as they are only silhouettes with what looks like weapons in their hands making them even scarier than if their identities were revealed.

The lighting in the image makes the image see like its a still from a horror movie as the character seems to be scared and the shadows make it seem dark and scary.

Film Noir

  • Noir = black = darkness
  • lies and deceit hidden in shadows 
  • some believe it was created as a result of post war fear and pessimism to do with the economy and worldwide unrest 
  • corruption 
  • greed 
  • femme fatales 
  • detectives and heroes trying to stop them despite pessimistic story lines 
  • high contrast lighting
  • city setting 
  • dangerous areas and people
  • pessimism and fatalism 
  • protagonist is doomed or fighting against the odds
  • morally ambiguous 
  • femme fatale = mysterious and seductive 
  • violence 
  • narration - insights to thoughts/feeling - less need for show not tell techniques 
  • Neo noir = new noir 
  • similar dynamics to noir but set in a modern time with modern issues 









In this scene from a film noir style movie, we see that they've used a femme fatale as the main character which was quite common among film noir movies as many audiences enjoyed to see this. Women enjoyed watching movies starring a femme fatale because she plays the role of a powerful woman during a time where women were still not being seen as equal members of society to men which makes the audience aspire to be like her. The male audience also liked this because the femme fatale was often a good looking character which used her looks to manipulate men which meant the male audience were fond of her. Film noir movies use low-key lighting to add mystery and a sense of danger which is accurately done in this clip as we see they used soft lighting as they're in a jazz club which has warm and low levels of lighting to create a mysterious tone - who is this woman sitting alone? - enigma code?

Costumes The first character who hands over the paper is wearing a suit so I had one of my actors in a suit. Lighting The clip has high key natural light so I filmed the scene outside to recreate this. 10. Cinematography Practical

In my cinematography practical ‘Glimpse’ I used cinematography and other aspects of media that we’ve learnt to build a narrative about a man walking somewhere he shouldn’t be and he is then stalked and hunted by a mysterious non-human killer. I used cinematography to build tension and create an eerie atmosphere by using pov shots to make the audience feel as though they’re the ones fighting by letting them see through the eyes of the characters.
