In the opening scene from ‘The Dark Knight (2008)’, cinematography is used to create a tense atmosphere that attracts the attention of the audience and keeps them invested by giving them a look at the intense action and crime that happens in the world that the movie is set it. At the beginning we see a close up of a clown mask in a man’s hand which connotes chaos which we see soon after this shot. The next scene shows two men zip lining from one building to another with a very long drone/crane shot which shows how high up these criminals are and gives the audience a sense of how daring and dangerous by showing how high up they are also showing they’re willing to do stunts that risk death to commit their crimes. When the camera goes back to the first group of thieves there’s a use of wide/long shots and tracking shots to show how all the characters and how precise and well prepared they are as they know exactly where they all need to go.Throughout the bank robbery i’ve identified that the cameras are quite shaky suggesting that the scene was filmed using hand held cameras rather than tripods or shoulder mounted cameras, i believe this makes the scene feel more realistic as it adds to the rushed element of a bank robbery which we know needs to be done quickly in order to be successful and the shaking could relate to the characters being stressed/ afraid as they don’t want to get arrested/killed.

I believe the use of camera work in the scene is good in giving the audience a feel for the setting as majority of it is set in a busy bank which at the start we see is located in a busy city through the use of extreme long shots. It also helps us establish what type of character we’re meeting as we get close ups of the guns and mask props of the criminals which match up with the villain character type that propp describes.

In this still from the movie ‘blade runner 2049’ we see a long shot of the protagonist standing next to his car, looking out at the desolate dystopian land before him. The use of the long shot makes the character seem so small and almost insignificant in comparison to the city before him and i believe this was done to show how lonely life feels in his dystopian world.
