The BBFC
1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? This history of the BBFC page may help.
It is responsible for regulating media within the UK to help people decide what is appropriate to watch based off their age/level of maturity. It's funded through the fess charged for classifying content and they're linked to the government by the law made which requires all content to be classified before release.
2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.
A team will view each bit of media in order to get a wider range of opinions/views who note down things about the general themes in the product then they write up a brief reasoning as to why they believe it should be set at that age rating. It is referred to their supervisor if they're unsure on what rating is suitable.
3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?
It gained media coverage because the choice of age was thought to be too low for the level of violence and the themes seen within the movie.I believe 12 was slightly too low and they should've gone with 15 as there seems to be a lot of violence which could have a negative impact on a younger child who'd still growing and learning.
4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?
Dangerous behaviour, drugs, discrimination, bad language, brief and discreet nudity, sex, references to suicide and self harm but not in detail, some scenes may be disturbing as long as he overall tone isn't and mild violence with no gore unless justified by context
5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.
It was given a rating of 12a due to the use of racist language (P word), racist behaviour (the spray painting, chasing, urinating in letter box, etc.) and moderate bad language.
